Introduction:
A measure of a country’s wealth is the GDP, gross domestic product, which accumulates all economic activities. If the GDP is growing there is economic growth, if it falls there is a recession. During the economic crises from 2008-2012, GDP growth in USA and Europe have regularly been around zero or negative.
In China, the GDP growth has been around 10% per year most of the time since 1990.

China has been able to eliminate some of the most serious poverty. This follows the logic of economists who say that a growing GDP = economic growth will eventually solve the problems of the Poor.
India was forced in the early 1990s to introduce so-called market reform in order to get loans from IMF. Since then the GDP has grown fast and steadily and many Indians have entered the middle class of consumers. However, the Poor in India remain desperately poor and have not seen many gains in the midst of growing GDP.

During the last 10 years much of Africa have had a growing GDP. Angola have had growth rates of 15-20% leading to optimism among many Angolans.

When Reagan was president of USA in the 1980s he introduced the idea of “tricle down economics”. He cut taxes and welfare programs for the Poor and said that this would lead to economic growth that would eliminate poverty. Since his policies has been introduced all over the world leading to economic growth.
Well meaning economists in UN agencies such as Jeff Sachs have supported these policies, because they believe economic growth is necessary, but want more programs and projects that helps the Poor.

In this task you will take a look at the issue economic growth and the Poor and on some theories of development.
