Wording:
The task is to write an article for the school’s newsletter.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
Writing articles is an art on its own. You want to say a lot in as few words as possible.
You must know what you want to tell. This means you must organize your thoughts around the message.
You must write in a clear way that will not be misunderstood. When you speak to a person you can also rely on body language and you can correct an error when you sense that a person cannot understand you. But when writing, precision is of great importance.
Writing an article to the school’s newsletter means writing to the public, as the newsletter is used to send to friends and families and to hand out to people interested in what we do. It is very important that you take this into consideration.
It helps to generate a picture of whom your are writing to.
Remember, sometimes you can get a big and complex message through by starting with a simple example or story from you daily life. For example if you want to describe the situation of people living in poverty, you can start about telling the story of a specific person you know – that person is typical for the issues you want to pass on.
Directive:
This task is scheduled for 4 hours.

Chose a clear headline/topic for the article.

Generate the message – you could write key words on a piece of paper, take a walk and think it over, lie down and close your eyes and imagine the story…

Write the article – max 1 page. Include 1-2 pictures.

Leave the article for a day or two – then return to it and read it with fresh eyes and try to imagine you as an “outsider”.

Rewrite the article if necessary (which it probably is!).

Get comments from 2 other people.

Rewrite again if necessary.

Send the article to your school’s newsletter editor.
