Introduction:
This following definition of the word ‘article’ is taken from the Benjamin Webster dictionary.

An article is a written composition in prose, usually nonfiction, on a specific topic, forming an independent part of a book or other publication, as a newspaper or magazine.

It is actually not too difficult to write an article in today’s world - in our part of the World.
As long as you respect some common rules for how to write an article, anybody can go ahead and express their thoughts and opinions in a written text, and you can get it published right away if you have an Internet connection; you can write a blog, or you join the debate in the news-media Internet sites.

Writing the thing itself is also simple – as long as you have a computer with a text program; you can write – see what you wrote – change a bit - and if you do not like it at all, just press the delete button, and you can start afresh. Rephrasing a sentence is made simple today …. if you want to insert a section you do so effortlessly.

If we go back just 30 years, it was not that easy. At that time people wrote by hand or were using mechanical type writers. The ‘delete function’ was the eraser, and you could not edit texts like you can today, where moving a chapter or section to some other location in the text is not a problem.

The personal computer goes back to 1982 with the ‘Commodore 64’ as the first computer to enter ‘ordinary people’s’ houses.

So, when did writing begin then?
It is generally agreed that the writing of language (not only numbers) was invented independently in at least two places: Mesopotamia (specifically, ancient Sumer) around 3200 BCE – 5000 years ago, and Mesoamerica around 600 BCE – 2600 years ago.
The written word has up through time been at the ownership of the few. Most words were written by slaves who wrote what their owners demanded. Early writings include accounting of valuables, religious writings and praising of the great leaders of the time.

How many people are illiterate in the World of today?
Answer
According to a recent survey, it is reported in the ‘CIA World Factbook’ that there are more than 775 million illiterate adults in the world today. About 67 million children do not have access to primary school education.
In 2010, the global adult literacy rate was 84.1%, compared to 89.6% for youth. (UNESCO facts from 2012).

This short introduction wanted to give you a broader idea and understanding of ‘writing’, and now we hope you are prepared to go on reading the files that will go more in details about what an article is.

Enjoy!
