Wording:
The task is to use the recent coup in Burkina Faso as an opportunity to get to know more about this small West African country.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
Burkina Faso is a small land locked country in West Africa with approximately 17 million people.
Until 1983 it was called Upper Volta and is a former French colony. In 1983, president Thomas Sankara took power and renamed the country Burkina Faso – meaning “Country of up-right people”. Sankara is often called the Che Guevara of Africa. He was president until 1987, where he was murdered. He launched one of the most ambitious and radical programs for social and economic change ever attempted on the African continent – to the benefit of the poorest people in the country; Self-reliance in food production, free medical care and education, ban on female mutilation and forced marriage, nationalization of all natural resources, reduction in salaries of government employees (instead of big Mercedes Benz they got small economic cars or bicycles), went up against IMF and foreign influence – and much more.
Today we seldom hear about Burkina Faso and we will use the recent coup where Kaboré was sworn in as the new president at the end of 2015 as an opportunity to learn more about this small west African country and what happened to the radical ideas of Thomas Sankara.
