Wording:
The task is to study how Mozambican peasants are struggling against the occupation of their land by transnational corporations.
Time:
hours
Introduction:

Ever since Vasco Da Gama found the sailing route to Asia by going via Cape of Good Hope in Africa, Europeans have largely looked upon Africa as a continent they could just pick and choose from as they liked.

By taking millions of slaves and transporting them to “the New World” as labor force. After the Berlin Conference in 1884-86 where the European powers divided Africa between them, the colonialist were free to grab whatever resources they pleased – in total disregard of the people living there.

Now it seems, that there is a new wave along the similar attitude – looking at Africa as “open for business” and with transnational companies – often in cooperation with local African government – opening up for land grabbing.

One such example is taking place in Mozambique right now – with huge protests from the people affected thereby.

ProSavana is a mega project launched in 2009 in the Nacala Corridor in 19 districts in the provinces of Niassa, Zambezia and Nampula in northern Mozambique. The purpose is to “improve the food security and the production of food through an

improvement of the productivity in the local agriculture and through engagement of private investments in developing production chains”, in reality to open up some of the most fertile land in the country to transnational agri-business with the assistance of the Mozambican, the Brazilian and the Japanese governments. Today, the size of the area covered by ProSavana is 102.000 km2 or more than 10 million hectares of land and forests – larger than Portugal, and inhabited by more than 4 million Mozambicans.

Study this example of land grabbing and dig into the background and consequences of such developments

Directive:
This task is scheduled for 2 hours.

Read the article: “The struggle of Mozambican peasants”, OWU 2015.

Consider the questions:

Is large scale industrial agricultural production the solution for the people in Mozambique?

What role do the 4 million people living on the land have in this development, if any? What is their future?

Who benefit from such a mega enterprise?

Consider the importance of LAND to ordinary people in the light of future survival.

Send your considerations to your teacher and share them with your team. These are serious and necessary considerations to make as a Development Instructor.
