The task is to study the 17 sustainable goals set up by United Nations as a follow up of the Millennium Development Goals.
Time:
hours
Introduction:

In the beginning of the new millennium 189 countries within the United Nations agreed to 8 main goals for improving conditions for people and the environment in the world to be achieved by 2015.

The first area was to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. The goal was set to halve the number of people living on an income of $1 a day or less, within the timeframe from 1990 to 2015. This means 500 million people should move out of extreme poverty. Other areas were universal education, gender equality, child health, maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS, environmental sustainability and global partnership. Millions of people worldwide were looking forward to see what such a massive agreement would bring forth of changes in the world and many have used these goals as guidelines in their development efforts.

Disastrous wars and economic crises during the first decade have added difficulties keeping focus on the millennium development goals.

New wars have claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and many more wounded. Military budgets have sky-rocketed and still do.

In the fall of 2008, banks in USA were bankrupt. They got trillions of USD in government aid and were saved, but the problem grew to world economic crises, where production in many sectors was cut back. This caused unemployment for millions of people. Food prices rose. This hit hurt the Poor with already little money to spend.

In the study task “Millennium Development Goals” in the Subject “The Poor” – Causes of Poverty, you can read about the Millennium Development Goals and their progress towards 2015.

On the UN General Assembly in New York in September 2015, 193 countries unanimously adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals to be achieved by 2030 and substituting the Millennium Development Goals.

These new goals are set on the base of the experienced learnt from the past 15 years and takes new needs into the picture.

As people engaged with development work these goals are essential, not only to know but also to related to and use in our daily work. They constitute a common platform for us to hold each other accountable to and to share results and best practices from our activities.
