The task is to learn what happened at the UN Climate Summit in Paris 2015 and consider what impact this will have on the fight for a livable planet.
Time:
hours
Introduction:

At the end of 2015, 80 heads of state and over 40,000 officials meet in Paris for the UN Climate Summit. The UN has hosted such summits 21 times, starting in 1992 with the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

In 1997 the summit agreed to the Kyoto Protocol – but so far 4 nations have still not ratified this agreement: Afghanistan, Southern Sudan, Taiwan and the USA.

As the USA is responsible for 25% of CO2 emission into the atmosphere, it is essential that the USA is part of a global agreement to which countries can hold each other responsible.

The COP21 is the first time that these summits end with a unanimous agreement to act against global warming and climate change. President Obama said after the agreement:

“This agreement sends a powerful signal that the world is fully committed to a low-carbon future. We’ve shown that the world has both the will and the ability to take on this challenge.”

However, many climate activists, scientists and environmentalists had hoped for a much more radical outcome as they see global warming and climate change as the biggest thread to humanity and an issue that deserves first priority on our agenda.

So is this agreement only a small event in the fight for a livable planet or is it a big step forward in coming together in coping with probably the biggest issue ever facing humanity?

This is what you will deal with in this task.
