Dambisa Moyo thinks that aid has not worked for Africa, solving this task will give you an idea of what she tshe thinks will work better.<br /> And you will discover different approaches to development and form your own opinion.<br />
Directive:
<br /> Watch the film and then discuss your answers to the following questions: According to Dambiza Moyo: <ol> <li>What was the original idea of the aid model?</li> <li>How has Africa fared with regard to economic growth and poverty levels?</li> <li>Which finite aid programmes worked?</li> <li>What is the problem with open ended aid agreements?</li> <li>What alternatives are suggested?</li> <li>Why will countries like America find aid to Africa less easy to justify?</li> <li>What is her opinion about humanitarian aid, small donations from individuals and about government aid</li> <li>How does the aid system allow governments / leaders to abdicate their responsibilities (and what is a “reverse Boston Tea Party”)</li> <li>What are the “artifacts of aid”</li> <li>Which countries avoided becoming “addicted to aid” and “took the road less travelled”?</li> <li>What link is made between aid and civil unrest / coups in Africa?</li> <li>Which 3 things are wrong about celebrities being involved in raising aid?</li> <li>Why is Africa’s poverty a global issue?</li> <li>What are the pros and cons of China’s approach to and activities in Africa?</li> <li>How does she respond to the criticism (by Jeffrey Sachs) that her suggestions will lead to millions of lives being lost?</li> <li>Summarise the “micro-story” told to show how aid can do more harm than good</li> <li>What should Africa do rather than pushing for trade liberalisation through forums like the WTO?</li> <li>What are the pros and cons of interventions like provision of ARVs?</li> <li>Explain the problem of “dead money”</li> <li>What does she say about microcredit as a solution?</li> <li>Compare reactions from within Africa to those from western NGOs.</li> </ol> <br /> Read the attached file (review of Dead Aid) and then write your own summary. Include: why Dambisa Moyo thinks that aid has not worked for Africa, what she thinks will work better, criticisms of her book and your own opinion. (6pt)
