Introduction:
In 1798, Robert Malthus published the book: “Essays on the Principle of Population”. His main message was that in times of prosperity the poorer classes will have many children and the population will grow until such time that there is not enough to eat for all where after the poor will die in great numbers from starvation. Therefore the population can never grow beyond certain limits. He wrote this at the time when the world had 1 billion people. He was himself an economics professor at the East India Company College in England. This company at the time had full control of India and reaped profits so big that many people of India were plunged into destitution and famines killing millions had become quite regular occurrences in India.
Today there are neo-Malthusians who blame overpopulation for the problems of the Poor. When not polite they say things like: “The poor multiply like rats”, their solution is population control. They to oppose food aid in times of crisis and in extreme cases they support the idea of genocide.

Some religions operate with prophesies of the end of the world. The Maya Indian calendar came to an end on 21 December 2012. Luckily the world did not end, but some believed it would. Others had thought the world would end new year 2000, this we also survived (thank God!).
On 26 March 1997, 29 members of the Heavens Gate religious group committed mass suicide in San Diego, California, because they believed their souls would then travel to an alien spaceship near the newly discovered comet Hale-Bopp that at that moment was quite close to the Earth. What happened to their souls we do not know, but their dead bodies were later discovered.
Almost half of all Christians in USA believe that the world will come to an end as described in the Bible within the next 40 years. This effectively closes off their vision of the future.

Some fear a nuclear war, which could in fact kill all human beings if USA and other nuclear powers explode some of their many thousands of bombs. Some fear new diseases will kill most people as happened when the Europeans arrived to Mexico and 90% of the original population died within 60 years from the many newly imported diseases.

Global Warming and Climate Change is a reality even though big oil and coal companies pay lots of money to spread the impression that there is no real scientific truth to Climate Change. James Lovelock is the scientist who created the GAIA theory. He is of the opinion that global warming has now progressed so far that the Earth in future cannot sustain more than 1 billion people. The same number as in the days of Malthus 200 years ago, which means many will in his prediction die in the next century as climate change bites.

It can be very useful to consider future trends, to ponder where the world or societies or people are heading and to make guesses as to what may happen, so that we can avoid the worst scenarios and go for good ones. But if we “believe” in our predictions as absolute truths we are closing the future. As long as there are breathing thinking people, ready to work together for another kind of future, then we can make a very big difference; we can create another world.
