Introduction:
It is not too difficult to find faults with other people, to point out bad or very bad things going on in the world around you, maybe even to find negative things about yourself and your own situation. Such “fault finding” can be useful if the intention is to search for solutions, to try to see the issue in a broader context and maybe therefore somehow accept that this or that is not “perfect”.

Negativity is to get stuck in the fault finding-mode and to not go on to the the next stage of searching for solutions or ways around the problems. Negativity can become a state of mind. It can led to depression, anger or other emotions that may not be productive. If you are already depressed it is easy to be negative. You can say that negativity creates more negativity which may lead you into a closed downward spiral of negative thoughts.

Negativity is quite common. Read the newspaper or watch the daily news and there will be lots of negative stories. Listen to the gossip about other people’s wrong doings and you will find a lot of negativity. If you are poor or unemployed there will be lots of negative things in your life, but many poor people resist negativity and fight for a life in dignity even with the odds are against them.

People hit by an economic crisis become very negative and loose hope. You see suicide rates going up in Western nations in crisis, an ultimate example of closed of future.

In Christianity all men and women are born burdened by the primevil sin committed by Adam and Eve. As a result we are all sinful and thus a bit evil; the priest is likely to tell you. Some preachers turn this into extreme negativity, while others choose to look also at the bright sides of life.

Racist people and other bigots are ready to find faults with all people of a special “negative” category which depending on their views may be black people, women, homosexuals, Muslims, foreigners, rural people, the poor, the homeless, etc. Such negativity can be contagious stirring up hatred and even violence, closing the door for mutual understanding and a common better future for all.

The advertising industry is very good at building the image of the perfect person and life, and thus a negative picture of all those who do not live up to this ideal standard. Women should be ultra slim the fashion magazines tells us, and thus some young women in Western countries have a very negative view of the own body leading them into eating disorders that can be so severe that some starve themselves to death.

Going against “negativism” is necessary for anybody who wants to lead a good life. Many steps can be taken by the individuals, as you can read about in the file.
More importantly community solutions are an excellent medicine against negativity. When you go together with others to find solutions and all participate actively, you will find ways. Maybe not any final solutions but things will be better.
Positive living clubs in the fight against HIV/AIDS is a brilliant example but there are many other examples.
