The task is to build a dishwashing rack and learn why they are useful for people in rural communities.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
It is quite common in poor rural communities that people do not have any furniture at all. Everything takes place directly on the ground – people sleep on mates on the ground, they cook by a fireplace made on the ground, they eat sitting on the ground, etc.
The soil is a living thing with many different germs, microorganisms and bacteria. Common diseases like worms or bilharzia find their way into the human body through cracks in the skin – usually the feet. That is why people going to rural areas where they are not used to the germs and bacteria are recommended to wear good walking boots.

A simple way to improve health and hygiene in rural areas is to make a dish washing rack. A simple construction of wood that makes it possible for families to place their kitchen utensils on the rack above ground level and in addition also to cover them in protection from flies and other insects who can easily spread germs. It not only improves health and hygiene, it is also more comfortable for you back not to have to sit down or bend all day long.

If you have been a scout or gone camping in the wild you have probably made these racks before.

In this workshop you will build dishwashing racks and learn to explain how and why they can improve health and hygiene
