The task is to consider what a role model is and how you can be that.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
We all have role models that we try to copy. It is part of human nature.
Children will look at their surroundings to find out what is right and wrong pending on the reactions they get to what they do.
The first generation of leaders in Africa often looked to the past colonial leaders as role models in how to lead a country.
These role models have often been unconscious and bound by tradition, meaning those who constitute the role models have not decided deliberately what kind of influence they seek and why.
Deciding to be a role model, you can have a powerful influence on the people around you.
Right after independence in Mozambique, the head of Mozambique’s news Agency, Carlos Cardoso, who later was kills by a bomb, cleaned the toilet 3 times a day. Every time the toilets were stinking, the soap stolen and the towels on the floor. He said: “I want to insist on showing how a toilet can look like, and with time I hope to set an example that people will follow.”

As a Development Instructor in Africa or Brazil, you live and work with people in the community. They welcome you and be sure they look and notice every move you make – what you do, your mood, the way you cooperate with others, how you handle difficult situations, how you include people, the way you speak, how you are dressed….
You can use this to decided what kind of example you set and people will discover new ways.
You can for example influence gender issues and promote equality by showing that men can also cook and wash their own clothes, everyone takes part in the practical work, women can also become leaders, men and women work hand in hand etc.

Being a role model is to decided how you want to influence others. This means taking a good look at yourself, setting aside your own ego and act to the benefit of what brings matters forward.
You can decide some basic ethics you will follow regardless – like always being on time, spreading a good atmosphere, frank speaking, never avoid conflicts and treating all people with respect.
And then you must adjust your “role model” to what is needed in the situations you are in.
Demanding? Yes to some extent, but life makes much more sense and meaning if you can be part of pushing development through your examples.

So go for it!
