Introduction:
There is an invisible wall between the small farmers who live in rural areas and the other parts of society that live in urban areas. This creates two separate worlds, many times with no connection at all.
In rural areas, small farmers are isolated from almost everything: access to new technologies, trade markets, access to micro-credit for agricultural inputs, among others. The access routes for transport of the products to the market often do not exist. And if they exist, they are usually in poor condition. In our view to change that, are necessary strategies and structured actions.

In Brazil for example, in 2008 a non-governmental organization called HortiBrasil, gave funding to 500 small farmers for the production of various fruits to supply supermarkets outside of Brazil such as in the U.S. and Europe. This project paved the way for these small farmers to connect to the world and also brought them more income.

In Mozambique, Cabo Delgado Province, one of the projects, which showed great progress, was the Farmers’ Clubs. In this project, families were able to increase their income three times over the project period. As an example, Aima Seraphim, a member of Farmers’ Clubs, says: [... I am a member of Club Miez Metuge District in Cabo Delgado Province. I never thought anything would change in life as a result of agricultural production. I'm working on a 1.5 ha piece of land for horticultural production with the following types of vegetables: Chinese cabbage, cabbage, tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, peppers and beans. This year I managed to sell products corresponding to $ 3,666. I never had that kind of money in my entire life as a farmer. Now I'm safe in terms of food, health and education for my children ...]
The reason is that this project has implemented a new form of organization and new production techniques, such as the use of conservation farming, diversified crops, irrigation systems, and use of demonstration plots. One aspect that is very important in this work is that they learn to plan and solve problems they face together.

These examples show that small farmers have to break this wall that separates them from the rest of the world. It shows the contribution and potential they have for development at the local level and the world at large.
In this task you will have the opportunity to deepen your understanding of the importance of agriculture practiced by small farmers and will reflect on their contribution to the development to local communities and the world at large.
