The task is to learn about alcohol - the facts, the destruction and impact on society.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
Welcome to OWC.
You have joined a program where there is a NO DRUGS and NO ALCOHOL policy.
This is a very controversial stand taken by OWC and one which we are not willing to negotiate – debate YES, but negotiate, NO.
Regardless your opinion about and traditions with drugs and alcohol, you will have to stay within the frames of this policy during the participation in the program.
You can choose to live with this as a constant contradiction – you can enter the discussion about WHY this policy is in place and accept it – or you can actually make it YOUR policy and one that you actively represent throughout the program.
If you use your common sense and actually realize the damages alcohol has on relationships and development issues globally you will consider the last option: to make it your policy.

Drinking is essentially a social act, subject to a variety of rules and norms regarding who may drink what, when, where, with whom and so on. Drinking does not, in any society, take place ‘just anywhere’, and most cultures have specific, designated environments for communal drinking.
From the ethnographic material available, it is clear that in all cultures where more than one type of alcoholic beverage is available, drinks are classified in terms of their social meaning, and the classification of drinks is used to define the social world.
Few, if any, alcoholic beverages are ‘socially neutral’: every drink is loaded with symbolic meaning, every drink conveys a message.
Alcohol is a symbolic vehicle for identifying, describing, constructing and manipulating cultural systems, values, interpersonal relationships, behavioral norms and expectations. Choice of beverage is rarely a matter of personal taste.
“All government, without exception, conceal from the people everything that might further their emancipation, and encourage all that degrades and demoralizes them [...] all manner of amusements of the senses [...] even physical means of stupefaction, such as tobacco and alcohol, the tax on which constitutes one of the chief revenues of the state.” (Tolstoy, (1828-1910) from the book “Government is Violence”, published in 1990, p 95-96).
