Wording:
The task is to study and take a stand to Dewey’s thoughts on “Learning by doing” and consider how this fits to your own school experiences and your current work as a teacher
Time:
hours
Introduction:
In this task, you will study John Dewey: what he thought about the role of the school and how he was worried about the quality of teaching in the schools. When studying the life of anybody, you must always look for aspects that may inspire you to become better in what you are doing as a teacher.
When studying John Dewey, you must also pay attention to his persistence in the fight for education. His devotion and fight should also give you inspiration.
The objective of this task is to reflect upon the proposals of John Dewey (1859-1952), looking upon the school as a space for evaluating experience and the education for democracy. Dewey proposed that the school should be a laboratory for social life, “a miniature society” that could reflect all community situations.
In his theories, democracy should be learned through school education which would reconcile “learning by doing” and “learning by feeling”, permitting a pacific living together between the different social classes. He looked upon democracy as a means of equality and moral control and considered education as responsible for forming a more just and more human society.
To raise your curiosity about this man, I will present some statements of John Dewey:

“Learn? Certainly but, first of all, live and learn from life by living”

“We only think when we are confronted with a problem.”

“Education is a social process, is development. It is not a preparation for life, ,it is life itself.”

“The demand for freedom is a demand for power.”

Enjoy it!
Directive:
1. Read the files 1 and 2 – 30 min
2. Make your own investigation about the “Learning by Doing” method by J. Dewey and write an essay explaining his ideas, what your own school experiences are regarding this method both as a student in primary school and today where you are practising as a teacher yourself – 3 hours 30 min
3. Send the essay to the teacher.
