Introduction:

Communism is a word of French origin. It means the philosophy of being common. In many Western countries communism is associated with a dictatorial state that does not allow any freedom to people.

Among a great many socialists communism is seen as an ideal society where all people share and no one has privileges due to personal possession of land, money or other riches. Socialists regard this as a distant or maybe impossible dream society.

Primitive communism is used in historical materialism or Marxism. It means the earlier societies in history before there were economic classes and grave differences between people. When people were living as hunters and gatherers usually in groups of no more than 100 people there were no big men as all people had to share and to stick together so as to survive close to nature.

The hunter gatherer society, the Marxist historian will say, is communist because there is cooperation between all people and no room for exploitation because exploitation would likely mean that nobody could survive. This society is primitive, because life as hunter and gatherer is not economically developed. It has no modern technology, no hospitals, no books; people have only what they need to survive. The main contradiction in primitive communism is between human society and nature. This contradiction drove development. When, for example, people traveled to colder regions they were up against the forces of nature but developed the use of clothing, building of shelter and making of fire whereby they became able to thrive fighting against the consequences of cold climates.

The ideas and attitudes in a society are formed, historical materialism says, as "superstructure" built open the economic "basis" i.e. the way people must work to survive. In primitive communism people have to cooperate very closely and take care of each other. You will therefore see that people in such a society have healthy attitudes towards life though they do not possess our modern knowledge of the science and technology.
