Wording:
The task is to learn about what is the task of the UN security Council and to study examples of its importance and its internal conflicts, as well as to ponder about its future role.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
The UN Security Council is an organ of the United Nations.
It consists of permanent members and non-permanent members.

“The Security Council has the primary responsibility, under the Charter, for the maintenance of international peace and security.”

This quote sounds very nice and is indeed an important task!
Why is it then when we have such an international body that we still have wars raging? Who are the permanent members of the Security Council, and what are these members’ conflicts of interests? Who are the non-permanent members?
When the US invaded Iraq in 2003, the Security Council was not even asked, so in fact this was against the UN Charter and also actually against the NATO Charter. China and Russia had publicly expressed their disagreement with the invasion, so perhaps this was the reason?
Also in the present situation of Syria, you find China and Russia on one side, and the Western powers on the other. What are the arguments, and why is it not possible to come to any agreement?
