Introduction:
Teachers have great difficulties when introducing a topic on sentences to students.
This is so because the moment they start talking about sentences learners are already
put off. This is so because learners assume that it is a familiar area which does not
require a whole teacher to stand before them. After all they always use sentences
when talking or writing to their friends and nobody tells them how to do it.

How do you construct your sentences so that your listeners do not get bored? To
capture the reader's or listener's attention one needs to familiarise himself with types
of sentences, how to use them. Once this is done he should consistently use them.
For instance we have simple, compound, and complex sentences. When you always
use long sentences you will not have readers to read your work, neither can you have
the audience to listen to your speech. On another extreme, if you use short sentences
all the time you will not sound natural, therefore people will get bored with your
sentences and stop following.

So it is important to learn the use of different sentence types. Now learning alone
without active practice can not yield the needed result. Try it by mixing different
sentence types in order for the learners to feel the difference, variety and flavour.
Read the files, you will be a winner to your learners.
Directive:
1. Read the files about different sentence types in English and the rules
governing them.
2. Make a small poster exhibition and illustrating each sentence type with its
rules and with examples and explain it to other students.
3. Open the files and do the exercises in sentence types.
4. Send the finished paper and exercises to your teacher.

If you have Internet access, use the following links to solve this task:

Sentences: Simple, Compound, and Complex (Advanced
Composition for Non-Native Speakers of English)
Google (http://www.eslbee.com/sentences.htm)

Compound and Complex Sentences (Empire State College -
State University of New York)
http://www.esc.edu/htmlpages/writerold/pandg/exg10a.shtml

Advanced composition For Non- Native Speakers of English -
Google(http://eslbee.com/cgibin/quiztest.cgi?simplecompoundorco
mplex)

Else, use the PDF file from page 3.
