The task is to lead a debate evening about global poverty and its causes.

Introduction:
Fighting with the Poor is a key issue in our programs. And so are issues about the forces that run the world, the big issues of our time, the root causes of global poverty and many more issues.<br /> <br /> All of us are born into a world where there are rich and poor. It is an existing condition – and too many people think this is how the world is and the situation is not seriously questioned. “There will always be rich and poor people!”<br /> Nelson Mandela said: “Poverty is not an accident. Like slavery and apartheid it is man-made and can be removed by actions of human beings”.<br /> So global poverty exists because some forces have an interest in creating this condition and in keeping it like that. Paul Farmer (founder of Partners in Health) calls it “Structural Violence”.<br /> <br /> Debates are a very important part of digging into a matter and develop new understandings. It is not about arguing against each other or to see who can say the smartest things. It is about everyone pooling their knowledge and opinions together, about using each other to throw light on many aspects of the topic, about giving everyone the opportunity to formulate themselves to clarify their thoughts.<br /> It is about everyone leaving the debate wiser and more knowledgeable than before.

This task is scheduled for 5 hours. <ol> <li>Invite everyone for a debate evening about global poverty and its causes. Ask each person to prepare something to contribute with.</li> <li>Prepare yourself to open the debate with some basic information and statements.</li> <li>Lead the debate evening. Open with your basic information and statements and ask everyone to come with their thoughts and contributions. Lead the debate so it becomes a good debate, where everyone listen to each other, where comments are made to the contributions and sum up the results of the debate at the end.</li> <li>Send a summary of the debate to your teacher.</li> </ol>
