Introduction:
Landless people in Kerala have been struggling collectively for getting land. 10,000 of them entered the rubber plantation area of Harrison Malayalam Company by force, and settled there demanding land for their survival. "Land to landless adivasis and dalits has been a long-standing promise of the governments. But successive governments have betrayed us in the past four decades," says Laha Gopalan, leader of the organization Sadhujana Vimochana Samyuktha Vedi under which the people occupied the land.

For many Indians, land is the only asset that they possess. Nearly 60% of India’s 1.2 billion citizens depend on farming for a living, and on an average each hectare of farmland supports five people.

As India rapidly industrializes, the government and private firms are seeking large tracts of farmland to build factories, power plants, highways, and commercial large-scale farming. For these purposes, land is being taken from farmers, and common land is being grabbed, displacing a large number of people. You have already studied this in the task “Landless farmers”.

In many regions, poor people collect a significant share of their daily necessities from forests, common grazing areas, and public quarries. Loss of these resources means loss of essential livelihood options for the people in the area.
Land grabbing in one way or the other and negligence in the land distribution process trigger many struggles in India. This is also happening in many other countries in the world. You will read some examples from India, Mexico, Brazil and Zimbabwe in the files.
