Wording:
The task is to study from books, articles, reports and other documents about the issues of the group of Poor you have choosen and to produce a list of the theoretical studies you have carried out.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
When you have determined – in grand lines– the group of Poor and the theme of the action you wish to carry through shoulder to shoulder with the group of Poor it is time for theoretical studies that can deepen your understanding of the project you are going to do.

You can look for literature about the country and region, you can try to get hold of government reports from local offices or ministerial offices, you can look for World Bank reports, UN reports, reports by NGOs, articles on Al-Jezeera or other websites with articles from countries in Africa. You can also look in local newspapers or magazines. What you should look for is texts that in some way are related to the issues you are studying.

As you read you should take notes of important information and conclusions. When so doing, remember to note where the information was taken, such as the name of the book or report and the page(s).

...

The product of this task is a list of theoretical questions studied that you will send to OWU where it will be the basis for you final video conference exam. In the exam rules for this subject you can read the following:

b) The student sends a list to ISET/OWU of theoretical questions studied in relation to the group of Poor.

Therefore the theoretical studies serves to pepare you for the project shoulder to shoulder with the Poor while you at the same time prepare for your exam.
Directive:
This task is scheduled for 40 hours.

Search for and gather documents, reports, books, articles and other materials about the country and area where you are going to do your project.

Become familiar with the material you have found. Divide it into three categories:

Material that is very relevant to your project – which you should read carefully.

Material that is somewhat relevant to your project – which you will read quickly meaning that you read only the most important sections carefully.

Material that might become relevant to the project – which you look through to see if there are facts that are useful as a reference when you need to.

Take notes as you read. If you are two (or three) working together you both read all the material in category A and compare notes. The material in category B and C you may divide between yourselves (if there are a lot texts) and explain to each other.

When you have gone through all the material as carefully as time permits and have taken your notes, you produce a list of themes for the theoretical studies you have carried out (where you also mention the material used for each theme). The list you are going to send to OWU that will use it for your oral exam as your list of theoretical studies.

For each of the themes on your list you make notes on your conclusions of what is most important to tell and know about this theme. These notes you will need when you prepare for the oral exam. When you have reviewed your notes, you make any corrections needed in your list of theoretical themes so that you have a final version.

Send the final list of theoretical questions studies to OWU. (At your final video conference exam for this subject you will discuss one of the questions in the list for 20 minutes.)

If you are not in Mozambique use the attached files as examples of the kind of files you need to find.
We also suggest you to get hold of the books of Joseph Hanlon, who has writen many books on Mozambique over the last 30 years. In particular we can recommened the latest “Do bicycles equal development in Mozambique?”
