Introduction:
The world is littered with statistics, and the average person is bombarded with five statistics a day. Statistics can be misleading and sometimes deliberately distorting.

There are three kinds of commonly recognized untruths: Lies, damn lies and statistics.
- Mark Twain

This quote from Mark Twain is accurate; statistics are often used to guide the public in a specific direction or directly lie to because most people don’t question the figures. The aim of this course is to introduce the basics of statistical analysis and to encourage a healthy curiosity toward figures presented as facts.
A good example of how statistics can be misleading is GDP – Gross Domestic Product – the combined production and services of a country. This figure divided with the number of people in a country – the Per Capita Income - was earlier used to compare countries with each other. But the problem is that it does not cover for wide gaps between rich and poor and thus say nothing about the quality of life for the average person. So later the Human Development Index was created as a much more accurate measurement of the status of a country. The HDI comprises over 120 indicators added up with a mathematical formula to give an index between 0 and 100. A lot of decisions are made in this process – e.g. about what is most important in life – is it more important to have access to clean water than education? And so it is with all statistics – there are fundamental decisions behind the figures. When calculating unemployment, who is calculated as part of the work force? Are women included? So many questions, so many decisions, but we only see ONE figure.
Numbers are power. Apparently freed of all the squishiness and ambiguity of words; numbers and statistics are powerful pieces of evidence that can effectively strengthen any argument. But statistics are not answers. As simple and straightforward as these little numbers promise to be, statistics, if not used carefully, can create more problems than they solve. They are simply tools to convey a message. In a complex and complicated world they also provide some certainty.
