Wording:
The task is to read about the specialization in the Group of Poor in the Fighting With The Poor book, to decide on the group of Poor you will focus on and to plan your theoretical studies, investigations, skills training and project with a fellow student.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
Fighting shoulder to shoulder with the group of Poor takes place where the Poor live and work. You can plan for a project well in advance but you are working with people and must be open to change and adapt so that the project is not “your” project but a joint effort shoulder to shoulder with the Poor. Thus you must keep senses and your mind open so that your capacity to create, to work and to solve problems are used to the maximum benefit.

In this task you will prepare for studies, investigations and the project you wish to undertake. You also need to find out who to work with. The Fighting With The Poor book suggest to work with one fellow student. If this is not feasible, you can do the project on your own. We will add that should you prefer, you can also do a project in a trio and then aggree with OWU on this format. If you do so the expectations of what you will achieve is of course bigger as you now have six hands and three brains put to work shoulder to shoulder with a group of Poor.

You have to define the group. It can be one or several poor families, a whole village or community, or it could even be the Poor in a district, in a province or even in a whole country.
We suggest you choose a group that fits well with the type of project you are working at. If you are figting for income generating farming it could be with one or several communities, if you fight diseases of the Poor it could be an even larger area, if you choose a very intense project you might choose a “smaller group size”.

When you consider your ideas for a project and your investigations you might want to apply a method from the world of business management and planning called a SWOT analysis.
The idea is to consider these four elements in your project plan:

S: What are the strengths of the group of Poor, your strengths and the strengths of the community. This helps you to realize that the group of Poor have many strengths and abilities and to focus in on the strenght that you can build on when planning and carrying out the project

W: What are the weaknesses of the group of Poor. Here you must consider the weaknesses that will make the project difficult, not because you are going to call off the project but to consider how to overcome these weaknesses.

O: What are the opportunies. Here you must look at all the opportunities that you can build on such as land not in use, local government agency that might be helpful, a local market for some products, time that the group of Poor has but do not now use productively.

T: What are the threats to the project? Maybe you need permission from local authorities or leaders, maybe the project is dependent on good rains that might fail. Here you must list the possible threats in order to find out what you can do to minimize the threats or their possible effect on the project.

Directive:
This task is scheduled for 12 hours.

Read in the Fighting With The Poor book p. 112-126.

Decide on who to work with on the project and establish your group of two or three – or maybe of yourself only.

Define the group you would like to do the project with and a theme for the project. Then plan which investigations and studies you want to undertake to prepare for a successful project.

NB: If you work at a Humana People to People project as a Development Instructor you must coordinate your “OWU-Fighting with the Poor-project” so it fits with your current responsibilities as well as the aims and current status of the HPP-project. This means you must discuss and agree with your Project Leader, with other project staff and with the NHQ of Humana People to People in your country, so as to ensure maximum benefit for the group of Poor, the HPP project and yourself.
As the Humana People to People-project as well as the NHQ work in very many ways with bettering the conditions of the Poor there are many ideas to be had in the discussiosn and if you have good suggestions it is likely they can be implemented. Your OWU-project will thus benefit from being carried out within the larger frame of the HPP-project.

4. Produce a one page paper where you present the above considerations and decisions.Send the paper to your teacher.
