The task is to befriend refugees from the Middle East, get to know their story and share what you have learnt from them.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
The least we can say is that people from the Middle East haven’t had the luckiest life during the last decennia. Continuous wars and invasion have devastated much and many of the Iraqis had to leave their country and live as refugees in Europe and the United States among other places. While living far away from their homeland and from their loved ones, the Iraqi people have been adapting to another type of life as refugees. As a Development Instructor and as someone with a heart for humanity, you will find a visit to some of them extremely interesting and satisfying.

Listening and talking to your new friends about life and about what has happened to them and how they have perceived everything that happened in their country and being on the run in search of safety, can be a real eye opener for many of us. Adapting to a new culture after losing everything that was home for them, dealing with prejudices from many, finding ways to get a meaningful life started again are just some of the aspects of what being a refugee could mean. All these extreme circumstances have given them another look at life and a lot of life experience. And therefore it can be a very interesting experience to see how they have been affected by this state of life.

How did they experience the wars? What are their real first hand experiences? How could they keep their head above the water? Who do they think are guilty for their situation? How have they managed to get out of their difficult situation? How is it for them to live as a refugee? Can they feel at home in their new place? Do people welcome them? How do they see the USA? These are just some of the questions that you would really like to ask them.
Directive:

Visit some refugees from the Middle East, spend some time with them, talk and listen to them.

In which way was the daily reality of these refugees different from what you had expected? Has it affected you and how?
