Title:
Wording:
The task is to listen to a group of experts talking about new technologies and reflect on how new technologies could be used to fight with the Poor.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
Why listen to experts?
They know a lot more about specific subjects than we do. That's why they are experts - and we aren't. And it is good so. We don't have time to be experts … there are too many things to be done and too many of the Poor dying. But we can and must learn from them. They invest a lot of effort and time getting into specific technologies and unraveling scientific and technological challenges on the way. But sometimes that also limits their world view. I have found scientists and experts to be humble and some of them even feeling inadequate because their outlook in life is so limited.

We can become the link between the technologies they develop and the Poor, because we look at these from the needs of the Poor. How can their knowledge be useful in fighting shoulder to shoulder with the Poor? And how can they serve mankind in our future? We can point to the problems and give the experts the task to find solutions.

There is no doubt that climate change is happening. The Poor are going to be most affected, and least able to adapt. Technology can help, for example technology to desalinate water.

Information technology is crucial. Soon it will be possible to have a medical consultation with a robot making the physical exam and then communicating over SKYPE with a doctor thousands of miles away. Using the intellectual and technological resources available can make a huge difference in the life of the Poor.

We can definitely learn something from the experts. So prepare well and have pen and notebook and an open mind – and please do ask all your “stupid” questions – they will force the experts to pass on their knowledge in a language we understand (this is something true experts can do because they are totally on top of their field).
Directive:

Listen for a day to three experts on the technologies of the future. In person if you can. Or if not, use streamed or recorded audio material from the Internet – conferences being streamed live, appropriate video or audio podcasts from ITunes, TED talks, etc.

Did you learn anything useful from the experts that you can apply or adapt to use at your project or with a group of the Poor?

What did you learn about the way they presented material? How could you use that to help you present ideas?
