The task is to learn why NATO started and what has been its role during its history. It is also to consider the present situation and who is actually the enemy.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) started after the second world war as a body to protect the Western World from Communism from Russia and East Europe. It is a European organization, and the leadership is always a European general, however there is no doubt that the organization is highly influenced by the American Government and the American Industrial Complex. Since its start NATO has spearheaded over 50 military actions, invasions, and wars, worldwide.
During the first decades NATO's big enemy was the East block (the communist countries in Europe) and mainly the Soviet Union. Military bases were put up all over Western Europe, and in the 1980s nuclear missiles were stationed in West Germany. All this was done in the name of protecting the peace and withstanding the “overwhelming” threat from the Communists. There were, however, large popular protests against this armaments race, against leaders who did what they could to instill fear in people and so make them accept that big parts of the national GNP in NATO countries were used for the military.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, and after the collapse of the Soviet Union, several former East European nations have pursued entrance into the European Union and into NATO. The Soviet Union does not exist any longer and Russia is no longer the big threat it was considered to be. So another enemy had to be created to justify the war machine!

The question is now where is NATO standing and what does NATO see as its main role in the world? Who is the enemy and how should NATO fight this enemy?
What role does NATO have in the war in Afghanistan?
Why is NATO planning to include Africa in its political and geographical sphere when NATO was established as a defensive alliance against military threats to USA and Western Europe? How can NATO claim that poor countries in Africa and Asia are a military threat to USA and Europe?
Directive:
This task is scheduled for 4 hours.

1. Read about NATO in the file from Wikipedia. (2 hours)
- Summarize the arguments for NATO's existence.
- Write down key events in world history since the formation of NATO.
- Give five examples of conflicts where NATO forces have been involved
- Give your opinion whether such involvement was appropriate.
2. Read about NATO’s plan to support the African Security Force (ASF) (1 hour)
- What are the arguments for this?
- What are the arguments against this?

3. Give your opinion whether NATO is an appropriate defensive/response force in today's world or not. Justify your answer. (Consider how the world has changed – economic arguments – environmental arguments). (1 hour)

4. Send your conclusions to your teacher.
