Wording:
The task is to get to know about the wars and antiwar movements from people who were there. Listen to people’s stories and explanations of war and learn about how much people hate wars.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
ON THE WALL WAS CHALKED:
They want war.
The man who wrote it
Has already fallen.

This is part of a poem that was written in 1943 by Bertolt Brecht, a German writer, famous for his anti fascist writings and plays.
He was one of many antiwar writers in history, using his talents to make people think twice. Is this war actually my case? Am I just going to become canon food? What is the purpose of this war? Why should I go to kill my brother?

Unfortunately war is such a big part of a nation’s sphere (every nation has a war-department), that in all societies you can find people who have participated or have been strongly affected by war. In this task you are going to find some of these people – talk with them, interview them, take photos of their letters, learn how they suffered, what they think, and how they longed for a life without the daily fear of being killed. You need to locate people who have participated in war. But be aware. For most, they are wounded for life in their soul, and many are not eager to talk about these traumatic episodes of their life – so, be gentle, cautious, curious and understanding, not condemning. All who have been involved in war have seen and done atrocious things – and not all is easy to talk about. This is the colour of war.
You will also talk with people who have dared to speak up against war by participating in anti-war demonstrations or by using art to speak up and express their feelings. You should also seek out people who are using their position in the education system to teach the next generation to live in common and not to create enemies.
In this task you will talk with at least 4 persons. 2 persons who participated in war and 2 persons who protested against war.
Directive:
This task is scheduled for 8 hours.

Read the poems in the files attached in order to become inspired for the task. Eventually find more poems and literature from your own country.

Map out your possibilities for people to interview in your area – war veterans, former child soldiers, people who had close family affected by war. And people who stood up and protested against war.

Make up your questions before the meeting – decide what you want to get out of it. Prepare yourself by getting hold of some background information in relation to the topic you will talk about and the person you will talk with.

Meet the person, listen carefully and actively, try to understand from this person’s point of view, ask questions, discuss and become wiser. If possible see if the person has some documentation from that period – could be photos, poems, pamphlets etc., perhaps you can take photos of these, in order to share later on.

Make a report about your meetings with the 4 persons summarizing their stories.

Produce your own poem inspired by the many hours of talk.

Send it all to your teacher.

PS: If you do not have the possibility to meet with people and talk to them, you can find alternatives online – like “What I saw in the war”, TED talk #171. Agree this ones with your teacher.
