Wording:
The task is to share your experience about visiting a laboratory using gene technology and whether it has an impact on how you think about genetic experiences, GMO's, etc.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
Genetic engineering is the direct manipulation of an organism's genome using biotechnology.

How would you like to have self-cleaning clothes? What if clean fuel could be produced by bacteria? To get a vaccine, would you rather get a shot or eat a tomato? Imagine sportsmen taking genetic treatments that could enhance strength and endurance. In the wonderful world of genetic engineering, the possibilities are limitless. Or are they?

Some say gene engineering technology provides the opportunity to improve human and animal health, create a safer and more sustainable food supply and generate prosperity.

Gene technology in the form of gene modification by selection was part of the Green Revolution in food production that helped to raise the amount of food produced with 250%. Nowadays this can be done by direct gene modification, or gene engeneering. However, so-called GMO – Generically Modified Organisms turn out to have a long list of side-effects to human health.

Others say that once genetically engineered organisms, bacteria and viruses are released into the environment it is impossible to contain or recall them. Unlike chemical and even nuclear contamination, negative effects are irreversible.

Indeed a controversial topic!
Directive:

Find and visit a university which experiments with gene modification.

Prepare yourself for the visit by revisiting some of the tasks or courses about the issue, and prepare your questions for the visit, so that you get answers to questions that only can be answered by visiting a facility working with gene modification.

Write about your experience. Did it influence the way you think about the use of gene technology? Why?
