Planet Earth is a part of The Milky Way.<br /> <br /> The Milky Way is a galaxy, is a system of millions or billions of stars, and vast clouds of gas and dust, held together by gravitational attraction. The Milky Way is so big that even at the speed of light, it would take 100,000 years to travel across it. Astronomers believe that many stars in the Milky Way have their own Earthlike planets. From 1995 when the first extra solar planet was discovered to the middle of 2013 astronomers have spotted planets around more than 700 stars. <br /> <br /> All the stars in the night sky, including our Sun, are just some of the residents of our galaxy, along with millions of other stars too faint to be seen.<br /> <br /> Beyond The Milky Way there are many other galaxies. The deeper we see into space, the more galaxies, we can discover. There are billions of galaxies, the most distant of which are so far away that the light arriving from them on Earth today set out from the distant galaxies billions of years ago. <br /> <br /> Is there life on other planets? And if there is what does this mean to life on our planet? Well watching the movie “Contact” with Jodie Foster as the lead character will make a good background for a deliberation about possible extra terrestrial life in the universe.<br /> Enjoy!
