Introduction:
Food can relative easily be produced in sufficient quantity to feed the world’s population. In fact there is already today enough food production to feed the entire population of the World.

But still around one billion people are suffering from hunger and more than 2 billion do not have food security
In 2008 and again in 2011 the food prices have increased with up to 30 % on stable foods like wheat, maize and rice. Anger over soaring food prices has literally put a number of countries on fire in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. A crucial cause of the raising food prices has been an increasing speculation by traders and brokers who have entered the food market recently exploiting the situation to get high profits.
Ensuring local grown food will be a good way to improve food security.
It can benefit small farmers, it can protect against raising food prices coming from international events. Food produced and consumed locally may also provide a healthier diet for people than food from far away. If it is grown organically it is more nutritious and it saves the soil from toxic chemicals.
But the actual fact is that food in average travel 4000 km from where it is produced to the table where it is eaten.

The global food market affects people in the poor countries negative within both import and export

It destroys the home market by allowing imports of food that can out compete local farmers

The local farmer have no influence on the market prices of the goods they produce and many middlemen and speculators earn money on their products before they are sold to the consumers

Farmers in poor countries receive little or no help from their governments while American and European farmers receive big amount of money every year. This allows the European and American food companies to dump prices and thus out compete local producers

The solution to hunger is not to feed people in the poor countries with food from the rich part of the world but to allow the countries and people to feed themselves.

Such policies are not on the way and they will probably not come without more people taking things into their own hands. Here garden farming comes in. Much good and nutritious food can be grown organically on little land.
