The task is to learn about the reality of life in a slum of tin roof shacks and about the Poor of this slum and to produce a report useful both as a course and at your school.

Introduction:
<strong>Globalization has enabled multinational companies to grow ever larger and more powerful.</strong><br /> <br /> The Poor remain poor and very vulnerable to economic crises, draughts and other disasters may<br /> quickly lead from malnutrition to starvation while unhealthy foods and bad eating habits have<br /> created an epidemic of obesity that hit USA 40 years ago but is now increasingly a reality in<br /> nations such as South Africa where the so-called “Western” diet of processed food with few<br /> nutrients lead more and more to become overweight and to suffer from the diseases that follows<br /> from being too heavy.<br /> <br /> <strong>Living in the slums you have possibility to grow natural food.</strong><br /> <br /> Capitalist globalization has forced hundreds of millions to search for a better life than what<br /> impoverished rural areas can offer. Many end up in city slums or as migrant workers in other<br /> countries in search of higher wages in faraway places.
Directive:
1. Read the file and watch the two videos.<br /> <br /> 2. Visit a slum area in a nearby city (or use your experiences gained through travelling). Talk<br /> to five different people who live under different circumstances such as a lone mother with<br /> several children, a beggar, a street child, an old man or a street vendor. Learn about their<br /> life, why they live in the slum, for how long time, what their dreams are, who are their<br /> friends, what are they most afraid of, where do they sleep, how often do they eat etc.<br /> <br /> 3. Produce a five-page report on what you have learnt about slums and the people you met.<br /> <br /> 4.
