The task is to produce a newsletter where you become the voice of the Poor.
Time:

Introduction:
The Poor of the world seldom gets to be heard in main stream media.
We hear about them when natural catastrophes hits; when hunger strikes a region or
refugees flee a conflict area. But such reports are usually without a human face. It is
numbers of people loosing their homes or dying from hunger and presented in a way
that does not hit people in the heart and make them really understand what life is like
for the Poor. Or it is information about disasters that hits headlines for a short while,
gets people to take action by collecting money or donating in-kind to assist, but after
a while it fades out and other news take over the headlines. People move on. and the
further fate of the Poor is forgotten.

Fighting with The Poor is not a one-off action. It is a continued fight with no end in
sight at the moment in history. However it is a necessary fight if we believe in basic
human rights for all people on the planet.

In this small subject you will make yourself the “Voice of the Poor” and produce a
newsletter or small folder that you and your team mates can use when fundraising,
when bringing it to the public during the journal period or for the schools website.
You will present facts and figures about poverty and the Poor and you will give the
Poor a human face. You will argue for the need for Development Instructors and for
Fighting Shoulder to Shoulder with the Poor to make a better world.
Directive:
1. Make a disposition for the newsletter. Take empty pieces of paper and outline
the content – headlines, pictures, facts and figures, what can you do?

2. Use the attached file: “Poverty Facts and Stats” from www.globalissues.org as
inspiration.

3. Collect stories about everyday life of the Poor – from Development
Instructors returning from Africa, from your own experiences, from the
Internet or books. Attached are two files for inspiration: “Understanding
Extreme Poverty” from the book “Ending Global Poverty” by Stephen Smith
and a report from UNICEF: “Voices from conflict zones” – both files have
small case stories.

4. Write the newsletter and make an inviting layout with text and pictures.

5. Get comments from team mates and teachers to the newsletter and adjust it
accordingly.

6. Print the newsletter and post it on the school’s website.
