Introduction:
Malawi is a country with few industries. How can it create development?
Can Malawi create a sustainable economy, through the potential of agriculture and
tourism? Yes or no? The answer may be found in our reading material.

Malawi is a country with an enviably high potential for tourism. The tourism sector
in the last decade has tended to grow in a very big way; just to illustrate with some
data, in 2000, 227,600 tourists visited Malawi, in 2006, this number rose to 637,772.
This country has many natural, cultural and historical tourist attractions. The third
largest lake in Africa and the world's deepest is located in Malawi and its fresh water
has been a major draw for many visitors. The reserves and major parks offer
beautiful wildlife filled with the beautiful singing of birds, the natural forests, the
botanical diversity as well as the beautiful views of Mount Mulanje, 3,000 meters
above sea level, which also attracts many tourists.

Malawi, unlike many countries, has few industries; agriculture being one of the
sources of support of the economy. Although there is a certain amount of farming
being done, there is a dire need to greatly increase the agricultural sector. In view of
this, there is light at the end of the tunnel; the practice of agro-industry has already
begun, as ecological agriculture is the most recommended for Malawi.

The right path for development in the area of agriculture is for the government to
focus on peasant agriculture, following the example of Humana People to People’s
Farmers' Club, which is the only way that will allow for increased production for the
national economy. Nonetheless, of the various issues that Malawi is working on, one
of these is the strategy for agricultural development.

Some work is already being done by the Malawian government regarding the
formulation of strategies for agricultural development, the diversification of food
production, and the establishment of partnerships for financing the agricultural
sector in order to increase agricultural production.

Therefore we can consider tourism and agriculture in Malawi as having a large
economic potential that can help its few industries in raising the national economy. I
believe that with good policies for these two key sectors, it is possible for Malawi to
come out of the absolute poverty in which is immersed.

After an introduction about the few industries in Malawi, we invite you to learn
more based on the reading material we’re offering you.

Good luck!
Directive:
1. Read the files and make note of the most important issues.

2. Make a one and a half page summary about the agricultural and tourism
potentials that Malawi offers for the development of the country

3. Based on what you’ve read, write on one page what it means for the
economy of Malawi to have several strong sources of tourism.

4. Send your work to your teacher.
