The assignment is to analyze to what extent tobacco contributes to the development of the people of Malawi.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
In many countries, in particular African countries, agricultural production has been
instrumental in creating development for the population. Considering that the state
is responsible for the promotion of a stable food supply for the population, and that it
needs to ensure the creation of wealth and benefits for the majority rather than a
minority, it is necessary to regulate agricultural policies.

Despite Malawi having succeeded in the production of tobacco, the population is
still suffering because the results of this production have been of little benefit. It’s
evident that the tobacco farms and industries use a lot of manpower, but the workers
end up losing out because they are paid paltry wages which don’t compensate them
for their work. They spend a long time producing tobacco instead of food staples.
Let’s face it. Malawi has had a problem with food security, and this issue should be
a great challenge to the government to create sustainable agricultural policies for the
majority of the population.

In 2000 Malawi was the 10th largest producer of tobacco in the world. Around 99%
of the tobacco produced in Malawi is exported, and 80% of the workers are
employed in the tobacco industries. It is estimated that 75% of the production is
carried out by small farmers. Agriculture constitutes 1/3 of the GNP and represents
approximately 90% of export income.

As well, the multinational corporations and farmers, besides paying very low wages,
use child labor so they can pay even lower wages. Another factor is that tobacco
growth in Malawi is promoted to the detriment of food staple growth which results
in frequent pockets of starvation, necessitating purchasing flour and beans from
neighboring countries, above all Mozambique.

The little money that the population makes from the sale of tobacco, or from the
salaries earned in the tobacco industries, is all spent purchasing grain from
neighboring countries, and from this fact it can be concluded that the population
benefits very little from the production of tobacco.

In view of this, it can be concluded that the benefits from tobacco are directed at the
multinational corporations and the government. However we should also consider
this second question: “Why produce tobacco instead of necessary food staples in
view of the fact that tobacco is detrimental to people’s health”?

We invite you to learn more about the production of tobacco in Malawi.
Directive:
1. Read the files: F1 – F3. Take notes.

2. Write down points including benefits as well as backdraws for growing
tobacco. How does the concept match development and sustainability for the
population.

3. Write down point how you can see what viable alternatives there are for
Malawi in the production of tobacco that would benefit the population.

4. Present and discuss the point in a group. Conclude on the discussion.

5. Send you main points from the discussion to your teacher.
