Introduction:

While located on the east coast of southern Africa, the country is bordered on the north by Tanzania, by Malawi and Zambia on the northwest, Zimbabwe on the west and by the Mozambique Channel on the east and South Africa and Swaziland on the south.

After a long period of colonial exploitation that lasted for five centuries, the country is experiencing a great rush towards development. Many things are happening, such as, for example, efforts to provide education for everyone and free basic schooling to rural areas of the country, more schools, more teacher training, definition of the policy of health care access with the goal of making medical care services and medicines available to all Mozambicans as well as a communication system that is increasingly more comprehensive. However, the problem of good roads and transportation still remains.

Investments continue to grow and today the country receives support from a large network of companies as well as humanitarian organizations such as Development Aid from People to People (ADPP) that work for the development of the country and whose activities contribute to increasing the gross national product.

The data may show good prospects for development – there are economic institutions in the country. But the truth is that the country remains among the poorest in the world with the lowest Human Development Index (HDI), located at position 165, well below Madagascar, Congo Brazzaville, Liberia, Haiti, the Central African Republic and Guinea-Bissau.

Capitalism adopted in the eighties brought certain consequences for the population. Some state enterprises were privatized and some of these went bankrupt and many workers were fired while others went without wages. The number of unemployed increased.

Studies conducted by Joseph Hanlon and Teresa Smart in 2008 show that more people are poor now than a decade ago. There are people with mobile phones and means of communication, but without enough to eat. Large portions of land were given to private companies, leaving many people with nowhere to practice agriculture, which is their basis for survival and the base of the national economy.

This is happening at a time when the country is confirming the existence and exploration of natural resources like coal, natural gas, heavy minerals, timber, salt, graphite, bauxite, gold, precious and semiprecious stones, marble and the potential for the tourism, fishing and agricultural sectors. The question that arises is do the people benefit from these resources or the resulting profits? Maybe yes and maybe no. The reason for this is because in the midst of rich people, there are still a growing number of people who are living in extreme poverty - in the field and in the city! Think about it!
Studies conducted by UNICEF indicate that poverty in the country is considered to be the primary cause of the biggest health problems. About 46.4% of all children suffer from chronic malnutrition and 18.7% are underweight. 340 children die every day from illnesses that could be prevented, such as diarrhea, acute infections and malaria. 85 children are infected every day through vertical transmission. How can this scenario be reversed and how can the country’s resources be made sustainable?

Follow the instructions and good luck!
