Introduction:

Most of the workers in the mines of South Africa come from neighboring countries. 
With few jobs in countries neighboring South Africa, many of these citizens are 
forced to leave their homes and emigrate to South Africa seeking jobs and better 
living conditions. 
 
Many of these workers work in gold mines. They work long hours without proper 
rest, subject to various hazards and without compensation corresponding to the work 
performed. Some accidents are caused by negligence of the managers of the mines. 
Another factor is the wage differentials between white and black miners. There is a 
big gap in salaries between managers and miners. 
 
South Africa is one of the countries with the most mine accidents in the world. The 
national union of mineworkers in South Africa notes that in 1994, 5.727 people died 
and 424 were injured in mining accidents. 
 
The work in the mines is high risk, like, for example, the collapse of the mines and 
the inhalation of dust. As a result the workers contract lung disease and then they are 
not cared for properly. But these same workers create great wealth for the owners of 
the mines. 
 
In contrast the mine owners are only interested in accumulating wealth without 
observing the conditions of those who produce such wealth. The owners do not care 
about the lives of their workers: the supply of housing, drinkable water and other 
benefits.
