Introduction:
Swaziland is a small country in Africa. It was colonized by the Boers and after that
by the British. It reached total independence in 1968.

The country is a monarchy and changed into an absolute monarchy in 2005, when
the new introduced constitution prohibited all political parties.

65% of the population lives with less than $1.25 per day. Even so Swaziland is rated
as a country of medium development. The reason is the great expenditure of the king
that alone causes the GDP per capita to rise to a value officially qualified as
medium. For this reason the country has difficulties attracting external aid.

Due to the worldwide crisis of 2008/2009 the country faced economic problems,
continuing until the current time with liquidity problems. But so far no institution
has used the opportunity to tell the king to reduce his consumption. Only protesting
people on the street have done this. And they were beaten and punished for it. And it
is the people with low income that will pay to fill up the empty box of Swaziland.
For example, the government already started to stop the payment of pensions so it
does not need to harm the conditions of children.

The South African government granted an emergency loan only on condition that the
Swaziland government improves its tax system. This act was highly criticized in
South Africa, for example by the unions.

At this time the IMF is demanding its neo-liberal conditions in Swaziland in the
form of privatization, savings on the remuneration of public employees and also an
improvement in the tax system. After the fulfillment of the IMF demands, the
country can receive a loan from this fund. In relation to the IMF, the King’s
expenditure is out of the discussions.

The country has several other problems as the highest rate of HIV-AIDS in the
world, climate change, and environmental problems. However it has also resources
to get out of these problems. For example it has many tourist attractions like well
preserved parks.

In this task you will read and learn more about the basic aspects of the country, and
also relate them with the daily life of the population. Enjoy the work!
Directive:
1. Please read file F1 in order to gain an overview of the country

2. Please study files F2 and F3 and make conclusions about the daily life of the
population.

3. Discover the factors that influence the Gender Equality Index, and make a
comparison of these with the 2 other countries of Southern Africa and a
European country.

4. Please elaborate the basic facts of file F1, the conclusions of 2) ad the
comparisons about 3) in an article of 2 pages. Please send it to the teacher to
be marked.

5. Please publish the article on the public display window of the school after
having got the green light from your teacher.
