Introduction:
Swaziland has a lot to offer in the field of tourism. And it is making an effort to
attract more income through tourism as a significant way of combating the financial
crisis and unemployment currently affecting the country.

From a tourism point of view, historically Swaziland is known for being a sex
paradise because, during the period of apartheid in South Africa, the white Boers
went there to have sex with black women, something which was forbidden in South
Africa.

Sex tourism still exists in Swaziland, but this phenomenon is not different from
many other countries in the world where sex workers live in the worst conditions in
an abusive environment.

Tourism is still not very well exploited in Africa as such. This continent has 15% of
the world’s population, and it only received 3% of its revenue from tourism, and
only had 5% of tourist visits. With these small percentages, Africa has much more
potential and Swaziland in particular, due to its climate, natural resources and
landscape. So far tourism only contributes 3% of GDP and provides work for 4,300
employees. This figure is low, even taking into consideration that is does not include
the indirect impact of tourism in the form of higher demand for goods and local
services, community development etc.

From the end of the 1990s the government of Swaziland was going to try to promote
ecotourism in the country. So far the results of these efforts have obviously been
limited over this period, but due to the country’s precarious situation the government
is going to make even more of an effort.

Besides the environmental aspect, ecotourism has other features such as the cultural
side and local development in the form of generating employment and local wealth.
Swaziland has all these features as part of its strategies.

Another characteristic of ecotourism is the conservation of cultural heritage and
natural resources, such as the well maintained reserves in Swaziland, where they
offer safaris in jeeps and in the form of guided walking tours, which allow visitors to
experience a very special adventure.

You are going to study more about ecotourism in the files: Enjoy the studies!
Directive:
1. Read file F1 to further your understanding of ecotourism.

2. After read the files F2 and F3. Compile:
a. A list of tourist attractions in Swaziland which do not belong to the
category of ecotourism
b. A list of tourist attractions in Swaziland which belong to the category of
ecotourism
c. A list of schemes being undertaken to promote ecotourism in Swaziland

3. Send the lists to your teacher

4. Put the lists on your school notice board after they have been marked by your
teacher
