Introduction:

For many years many African countries remained under colonial rule, submissive to various injustices and oppression. As a way of escaping this situation, the African people had to unite to liberate their own countries from various forms of humiliation and bad treatment which they suffered over many years.

During the liberation process of African countries, they were confronted by great challenges towards the African people themselves, as far as comradeship and organisation amongst Africans was concerned.

Since its independence in 1961 Tanzania played a preponderant role in assisting in the struggle for the liberation of various African countries, like the opening of military training camps in Tanzania, the establishment of the Assistance Committee to the Liberation Movements in Dar es Salaam, and military aid in the form of arms and provisions. Various meetings and conferences with the aim of liberating some African countries took place in Tanzania, which had as one of their purposes to reinforce unity and the solidarity of the African people and its states. Besides this, Tanzania showed solidary attitudes to gathering refugees coming from other countries, such as Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

One of the examples of the conferences held in Dar es Salaam was in June 1962, where Eduardo Mondlane and some other Mozambicans took part. During this period Mozambique lived under Portuguese domination. One of the biggest objectives of the conference was to draw up strategies to reach national independence.

The Alliance of the Frontline States was created in 1975, and had as one of its objectives to aid the member countries to reach independence. Tanzania always defended that all African countries should remain independent and Africans should drive the destiny of their own countries. For its commitment, it was awarded the presidency of the Frontline countries.

It also took up leadership in the fight against the regime of apartheid in South Africa. For example in the invasions of Angola and Mozambique by the apartheid regime, the action of Tanzania as defender of African causes was to urge the international community to be against such aggressions.

In this task you are going to further deepen your knowledge on how Tanzania assisted other African countries to achieve independence.
