The task is to reflect, through concrete examples, how ignorance can become discriminatory and deadly, and to take initiatives to avoid this.

Introduction:
It is sad to see how ignorance of man damages him, discriminates and kills those who are
near to him. On the other hand, we are endowed with intelligence, but many still insist on
winning, enriching, even if it costs the lives of other men ... why all this? It is regrettable...
In Tanzania the killing of albinos is worrying. It is estimated that there are approximately
270,000 albinos in the country, compared with around 39 million inhabitants (2009). The
country has a concentration of albinos seven times bigger than the world average. Being
albino and living in Tanzania may cost him his life. In some areas of this African country,
the ignorant population believes that blood and mutilated parts of human albinos, once
collected and used in magic potions (drugs), bring luck and wealth. What their murderers
seek are parts of their bodies, such as fingers, sexual organs, languages, and hair. It is
horrible!

In addition, the albinos are accused of witchcraft “sorcery” and suffer the rejection of their
communities and their families. This has many implications, such as the exclusion of albino
children from school because they may not walk alone to school under the risk of being
killed on the road because of a lack of security. Most people also believe that if a man has
sexual relations with a young albino girl, he would be healed of HIV/AIDS. This has
resulted in hundreds of violations in this country in which more than 10% of the population
carry the virus.

Some measures and initiatives are being taken to eradicate this evil. For example, in 2008,
President Jakaya M. Kikwete banned sorcery in Tanzania and appointed an albino woman,
Al-Sheymaa Kway-Geer to the parliament. It was an important step for the
acknowledgement of the albinos, not only in Tanzania, but also in the African society. In
the same period, businessman Oscar Haule created a football team, the "United Albinos".
Watching albinos playing with others without anomalies in pigmentation of the skin, people
will appreciate the lives of the albinos instead of supporting their deaths.

The number of albinos is not big comparing it with the population of the country, but the
problem is the attitude towards superstition, which is considered very strong among the
people, and leads to discrimination. And you, as an educator, need to know that
discrimination, violence, and ignorance are problems that must be fought within society. In
this task you will focus on taking more initiatives to eradicate the problem of discrimination
and killings of albinos, as in the case of Tanzania.
