Introduction:
Tanzania, officially known as the United Republic of Tanzania, covers an area of
945,000 km2, and is the 31st largest country in the world. It is a nation that resulted
from the union of two territories, Zanzibar and Tanganyika. Its political capital is
Dodoma.

It is the country with the highest mountain in Africa – Mount Kilimanjaro. Lake
Victoria is the largest in Africa, with Lake Tanganyika being the deepest in Africa,
with unique species living in it. Tanzania is also known as the zoological country of
the world, and is home to species such as lions, zebras and elephants.

In economic terms Tanzania figures amongst the poorest countries of the world. In
2009 its GDP per capita was around 1,200 dollars, against 10,243 dollars in South
Africa. Like other African countries the economy largely depends on agriculture that
employs around 80% of manual labour and that guarantees approximately 82% of
exports. The main products for export are gold, coffee, cashew nuts, manufactured
goods and cotton. Agriculture contributes with 42.8% to the national GDP, while
industry does this with 18.4%, and commerce and services with 38.7%.
Since 1996 its relationship with the IMF led to the country having a high level of
debt. For example, in 2007 around 4 billion dollars were written off, even so, in
2011 its external debt is close to 7.5 billion dollars. The neo-liberal policies
implemented by the IMF led to the country privatising 335 of the existing 425 state
companies. This action resulted in the dismissal of the majority of the workers,
establishing the unemployment rate amongst the majority of the population. The
state was also forced to reduce expenses in public sectors, implying the reduction of
salaries amongst workers of that sector.

This situation places Tanzania in an economically dependant position and without
control of its production, whose annual GDP per capita growth was only 0.9% in the
period from 1970 to 2008. The areas of healthcare, education and others are equally
a very big challenge to Tanzania. For example, in the area of healthcare infant
mortality is 104 for every 1000 children under 5 years; 851 in every 100,000 people
die every year from illnesses that could be avoided.

As you can imagine, there are many factors that are worth taking note of. Look at the
files and follow the instructions in the assignment to gain more information on

Tanzania.
Enjoy!
Directive:
1. Study the files and note down the important factors.

2. a. Analyse the economic situation of the main sectors of activity in Tanzania
and discover the factors that led Tanzania to be in the group of the poorest
countries in the world.

2. b. Analyse how this situation has influence on the life of the population.

3. In a group you analyse in a three page article the following elements:
- introduction
- development
- conclusion
- bibliography.

4. Send it to your teacher for comments.
