Introduction:
Zambia, officially known as the Republic of Zambia, is a landlocked country. It
shares borders to the north with the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania, to
the east with Malawi, to the south with Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Namibia and to
the west with Angola. Its capital city is Lusaka, located in the southeast of the
country. Zambia is a member of the UN, the AU, the SADC, the Commonwealth
and COMESA. The population is divided into some 70 ethnicities and is
concentrated in the copper-mining regions to the north of the capital, Lusaka.
The Zambian presidential system is a representative democracy. The president is the
head of state and the head of government. There is a multi-party legal system. The
country has 9 provinces and in total has 72 districts.

In the mid-nineteenth century, the Portuguese, in their greed, wanted to integrate
whatis today Zambia, into their occupied territories of Angola and Mozambique.
Due to British pressure in land disputes, which culminated with the arrival of David
Livingstone and Cecil Rhodes, and guaranteed the English presence, the Portuguese
plan was thwarted.

Soon after independence in 1964, Kenneth Katunda became president of Zambia and
remained in poweruntil 1991, when he lost the elections that passed over power to
the Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) and its leader Frederick Chiluba.
At the same time, the country was living though an economic crisis, which is still
dragging on until this day. Even after reaching an agreement with the IMF, in an
attempt to minimize the crisis, the economic situation of the country has not
improved, quite the opposite, it has worsened for the lives of the people, with the
privatization of state industriesresulting in mass redundancies. This has provoked
deep-seated resentment for Zambians.

Zambia’s economy largely depends on copper, of which it is among the largest
producers in the world. Copper represents 90% of its exports. For this reason,
Zambia is known as the “copperbelt”. It also has reserves of cobalt, zinc and lead.
The country has copper refineries and produces cement. Even so, the country is
among the poorest in the world.

The country’s population lives on subsistence agriculture, which uses 73.7% of the
labour force, seen as an economically important activity. The main crops are potato,
peanuts, corn and manioc. There are also commercial crops such as cotton, coffee,
sugar cane and tobacco. Industries connected to agriculture produce vegetable oils,
cotton treatment, sugar and other derived products. In rivers and lakes, fishing is
practised, mainly for subsistence (artisan).

Zambia is admired for its natural beauty. It is home to the famous Victoria falls, on
the Zambezi river, which form a curtain of water around 90m high on the border
with Zimbabwe. Most of the country’s territory is covered by savannahs.

The national parks are home to a large variety of animals. Especially in the Luangwa
and Kafue valleys. The huge Nyika plateau dominates the eastern region and
contains the country’s highest point at 2.606m.

And so we now give you the opportunity to learn more about Zambia from the files
available.

Enjoy!
