Introduction:
Botswana is one of the countries in southern Africa that does not have direct access
to the ocean. Its neighboring countries are South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and
Zambia. It only has a 750 m border with Zambia on the Zambezi River. If it were
not for the strip of land from Ovamboland to Namibia, Botswana would also be a
neighbor of Angola.

85% of the territory is covered by the Kalahari Desert. In the northwest of the
country, there is the famous Okavango swamp with a lot of flora and fauna. The
most important river for Botswana is Limpopo that forms a large part of the border
with South Africa.

The Tswana people came to Botswana in the XVIII century. The first English
arrived in 1813, but it were Boers and Zulus who began to settle there because of
conflicts with the English in South Africa. In 1885, Botswana became a British
protectorate until its independence in 1966.

The country has many ethnic groups. One of these groups is the Bushmen. These
people were driven from their hunting grounds by the government in the early 2000s
in order to make way for the search for diamond deposits. This caused problems for
the Bushmen mainly due to the lack of water. They are now in negotiations with the
government to solve their problems.

Botswana is praised all over for its climate of political and economic stability. It has
a multi-party system where the president and vice-president are elected indirectly.
So far, the same party has always held the majority, but there are predictions from
the U.S. that say they may lose this majority in the coming 2014 elections.
The government is accused of having close ties with the U.S.: Along with Zambia, it
did not join the other SADC (South African Development Community) countries in
resolving the 2008-2009 crisis in Zimbabwe.

In capitalist terms, the country has done very well, for example, in relation to
economic growth and the qualification of human resources. But not all the people
benefited from this: unemployment is high, about 25% of the population live in
absolute poverty, the country has a high rate of inequality (the so-called “Gini
coefficient”) and the environmental problems are increasing.
Directive:
1. Skim through the files (F1 – F12) and other sources to get a good overview of the
topic.

2. Before making the plan, brainstorm in your group about different possibilities.
Discuss the places you could visit:
-mines
-rural areas
-governmental institutions
-development projects
-educational institutions
-multinational companies
-resource transport facilities
-resource exporter
-bank
-etc.

Discuss the people you could interview:
-miners
-officials
-development workers
-mine managers
-syndicalists
-farmers
-teachers
-elders
-activists
-etc.

3. Based on the discussion, prepare a day-by-day plan of your investigation.
Set goals for your investigation.
Indicate when, where and how you will travel, whom you want to meet and how
you want to obtain the information.

4. Present the plan to your Core Group. Receive the feedback and adjust your plan
accordingly.

5. Prepare the questions for the different interviews during your investigation.

6. Investigate as you planned.
- Readjust the plan and your questions according to the situation and new knowledge.
- Study the files to be better prepared for what you encounter.
- Collect information by making good notes, gathering materials, taking pictures,
recordings and videos.
- Don’t need to limit your interaction with the people to interviews. Consider joining
some of them in their activities if you think you could deepen your knowledge this
way.
Be open for the unexpected opportunities!

7. Write a report of 6-8 pages about the economy of Botswana based on your
investigation. You can start writing already in the beginning of your investigation
and develop and modify the text as you proceed.
- In the report, introduce the topic and the main questions, issues and/or thesis you
will be analysing. Present also the plan for your investigations.
- The content should include theoretical considerations as well as analyses of your
observations and actions. Support the arguments with the knowledge you gained
during the investigation, from the files and other sources. Remember to always
recognize and acknowledge the resources by writing footnotes.
- The conclusion should be based on the knowledge and arguments already written in
the text and should relate to the introduction.

You can decide yourselves the questions, issues and/or thesis of the report
according to your findings during the investigation and studies. Here you can find
some helpful questions:
-What are the main sources of income of Botswana?
-How much has the country been profiting from diamond industry?
-Why was diamond industry beneficial for Botswana, while in many other countries
on the continent the resources became rather a burden?
-Who owns the mines in the country?
-How do the multinational companies influence the politics in Botswana?
-What is the impact of the mines on local population?
-How does the mining affect the environment in Botswana?
-What are the working conditions in the mines?
-How are the workers organized?
-What is the policy of the government of Botswana regarding the diversification of
the economy?
-What are the future perspectives for the future growth of economy in the country?
-etc.
8. Send your report to your tutor. You can annex other information: notes,
documents, articles, pictures, recordings and videos.
