Introduction:
<strong>Charlie Chaplin</strong> has made some wonderful films that still today are very worthwhile<br /> seeing. His films are humoristic, warm and critical to unfair human conditions. In<br /> many of his films he is the screen writer, the producer and the main actor.<br /> <br /> Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977) became one of the most famous film actors in the<br /> early years of cinema films. He is most known for his films in the silent film era.<br /> Until around 1920s all film were produced without speech.<br /> <br /> Charles Spencer Chaplin was born in 1889 in London, England. His parents were<br /> entertainers and actors.<br /> <br /> Chaplin first toured as an actor in the United States in 1910. By 1913 he decided to<br /> move to USA where he was hired by an American film company called the<br /> Keystone.<br /> <br /> Chaplin played the role of a tramp in silent films, Chaplin's Tramp enacted the<br /> difficulties and humiliations of the immigrant underdog, the constant struggle at the<br /> bottom of the American society and yet he triumphed over adversity without ever<br /> rising to the top, and thereby stayed in touch with his audience. Chaplin's films<br /> enabled the immigrants to laugh of the officials that they in daily life feared.<br /> Chaplin, with his Little Tramp character, quickly became the most popular star in<br /> the film company where he worked. He gained enormous popularity among cinema<br /> audiences.<br /> <br /> The Tramp was closely identified with the silent film era, and when the sound track<br /> in films was started Chaplin refused to continue the character. Chaplin officially<br /> retired the character of the Tramp in the film Modern Times in 1936.<br /> <br /> In 1940 Charlie Chaplin produced and played the main character in The Great<br /> Dictator (A comedy about the brutality of Nazism and fascism).<br /> <br /> During the era of McCarthyism in 1950 - a period of hysterical smear campaigns<br /> against critics of society, Chaplin was accused of ''un-American activities''. In 1952<br /> the authority’s hostility against Chaplin reached a point where he decided to leave<br /> United States. Chaplin moved to Switzerland where he continued his carrier as a<br /> film producer and an actor.
