Introduction:

PRESS RELEASE OCTOBER 17, 2018 from The World Bank
'Nearly Half the World Lives on Less than $5.50 a Day. Over 1.9 billion people, or 26.2 percent of the world’s population, were living on less than $3.20 per day in 2015. Close to 46 percent of the world’s population was living on less than $5.50 a day.'

Poverty strikes especially hard on children. When there is a shortage of food, the children will often be the last to get. They are physically and emotionally vulnerable and they cannot fend for themselves. Though parents living in poverty love their children as much as anyone else, they are often left with hard choices.

The dire conditions of nearly half of the world’s children are deeply related to poverty. 26% of the population in the world is under 15 years (2019).

The world has an estimated number of 2.3 billion children under 18. Nearly 2 billion of these live in a developing country. 1 in 4 births of the global population of children under five have never been registered. Despite progress in the past two decades, one third of children under age 5 are malnourished – stunted, wasted or overweight – while two thirds are at risk of malnutrition and hidden hunger because of the poor quality of their diets. Undernutrition continues to exert a heavy toll. In 2018, almost 200 million children under 5 suffered from stunting or wasting while at least 340 million suffered from hidden hunger. (UNICEF SOWC 2019). Nearly 10 million children under the age of five die every year - more than 1000 every hour. Almost all these children could survive and thrive with access to simple, affordable interventions.

The phenomenon of street children is growing globally.

Few countries and cities anywhere in the world today is without street children.
Around 150 million children are street children in the world today.

Africa has about 25 million children living in the streets as a result of poverty and
poorly functioning social systems. WHO and UNICEFF are estimating that 1,2 million children will die during the coming 6 months (from May to November 2020) / that is 200,000 per month, not because of Covid 19 / Corona Virus but because the healths systems in the poor countries suffer enormously lack of equipment and medicine because of world lock-down in production and transport.

Street children are also found in rich countries.

About half of child deaths occur in Africa. The main causes are diarrhoea, pneumonia, malnutrition, and measles. One in six children in Sub-Saharan Africa die before their fifth birthday.

Around 1 million families in the world are headed by children. This number is increasing as the AIDS pandemic is taking its toll.

400,000 children become blind every year because of lack of vitamin A, their disability could have been prevented for only a few cents per day.
