The task is to make investigations at a soup kitchen and understand why there are so many of them in the USA and what the backgrounds are for the people coming there.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
The USA is the richest nation in the world and yet 47 million people to not have food
security – that includes 20% of all children in the US.

Over 550,000 people are homeless, and again many of them are children.
Lack of food security hits hardest among children, immigrants, veterans, disabled,
older people, African-Americans, American Indians and other minority groups.

In spite of national programs conducted by the USDA (United States Department of
Agriculture) and a huge effort by thousands of organizations, churches and
individuals, the number of people who do not know where their next meal is coming
from is basically not changing.

People trapped in a situation without food security are caught in the cycle of poverty
with its many consequences for all aspects of life – job, life quality, health, economic
issues, emotional stress…..

Quote from Humana People to People’s Charter:

“HUMANA PEOPLE TO PEOPLE is focusing on a series of central elements for any
nation in its understanding of its cultural life.
When that includes
Taking good care of its children and young ones
Taking good care of its sick and weak ones
Taking good care of its old ones
Protecting all outcasts of fortune
Safeguarding the right of all to practice The Solidary Humanism
Defending the human rights of all its citizens
Economizing well on the common wealth in a process of fair sharing we shall
understand the culture of that nation as humanely founded.”

There is still a long way for the USA to live up to this definition of a nation being
humanely founded.

By volunteering in a local soup kitchen for a day, you will in this task learn about
some aspects of poverty in the USA.
Directive:
1. Read these two articles to get a small glimpse into poverty in the US:

“The Cycle of poverty is hard to break in the poorest US city”, by Pam Flesser, July 2012, www.npr.org (F1)

“America’s Poverty Problem Hasn’t Changed”, by Gillian White, September 2015, www.theatlantic.com (F2)

2. Make an appointment to volunteer for one day in a local soup kitchen. Attached
is a file with a few soup kitchens in the neighborhood of the school. (F3a)

3. Write down the questions you want to find answers to by talking to the staff, the
volunteers and the customers. See file with examples of questions (F3 b)

4. Get your questions qualified by the teacher.

5. Volunteer for one day in a soup kitchen and get answers to your questions.

6. Go through the answers together with 2-3 other team mates. Draw some main
conclusions focused on:

WHY is there poverty in the US?

Portraits of people living in poverty?

Portrait of people dedicated to do something?

7. Present your conclusions to the Common Meeting or a special debate evening
on poverty in the US.

8. Write a summary and send to your teacher.
