Introduction:
“Development” is a buzzword that we hear daily in all sorts of relations. It is in fact a
relatively new term, in spite of the fact that development has taken place since beginning of time, and that the drive for development has shaped decisions in all human societies.
It is not until after World War 2, when we stood with a world divided in developed and less developed countries, that studies and theories of how to create development gets on the agenda.

Since then it has been a focus of more than 70 theories to figure out how best to solve the gap between the developed and the less developed parts of the world.

Many theories have been based on the assumption that poor countries needed to go
through the same development as the rich countries - from agrarian societies - to
industrial societies - and then into the modern information age; and since most poor countries are agricultural societies, supporters of these theories have totally neglected to bring about development based on the resources and capacity of the countries - and failed.

During the 70’ties there was an awakening awareness about resources. Terms like “limits of growth” became book titles and warned that there was not enough resources on the planet for poor countries simply to copy what developed countries had done. Copying was simply not an option.

Today the leading term is sustainable development.
Sustainable development means: a global balance as a confluence of social responsibility, economic development and ecological care:
• From linear to three dimensional
• From simple to complex
• From short term to long term
• From top down to bottom up
• From dependency to independency
• From experts to people.

The change of concept also reflects in the way we measure development. From simply
comparing the country’s GDP per capita, much more complex tools are needed to give a
true picture. The Human Development Index, for example, use 226 indicators to compose an index to rank and compare countries.

In this task you will get to know about different theories of development and what they
resulted in and you will make your take on the matter.
