Introduction:
When we look at the world today compared with the last 50 years, some things have changed for the better, and some have changed for the worse. Technology has made it possible to solve many issues and have made life easier for many people, computers, internet, affordable transportation and satellites has made the earth much smaller, and we can easily get access to information from around the globe. But more people than ever live in poverty and with inhuman conditions.

We see desperate attempt to drill even deeper for oil, or fracking for natural gas and we see solar panels and windmills shooting up. We see fresh food supermarkets closing down in inner cities in the USA, where people cannot afford to buy their products, and we see a growing urban farming movement, growing fresh vegetables on empty lots here, there and everywhere.

The American scientist Carl Sagan writes in his last book he wrote before he died - “Billions and Billions” - that the 20th century will be remembered for three things:

1. Our ability to prolong and enhance life.

2. Our ability to destroy life and for the first time the ability to destroy the entire
human civilization.

3. A tremendous ability to understand the smallest elements in our nature and the
nature of the universe itself.

Clearly we see opposing tendencies emerging. The ones holding the best solutions
will prevail. The future is in our hands.

Many people and institutions have predictions and opinions about what needs to be
done, in order to influence which way we are heading. If you have done task one in this
section, you have already met some of them. In this task you will meet more.

Good luck in expanding your horizon about what the future holds and use this to help
you on your own path in life.
