The task is to investigate and discuss tendencies and visions for the future role of China in the world.
Time:
hours
Introduction:
China is no longer a distant and unknown country. China is, in fact, the protagonist
of the lives of many people in the world and increasingly in the western world. But
China’s power doesn’t lie in the mere fact that we see the word “China” in almost
all the objects that surround us.

Both its population and its power and wealth are growing very fast. Fewer and
fewer countries can compete with China. A study from the Organization for
Economic Cooperation and Development indicates that inequality remains higher in
China than most other developed countries. The gap between rich and poor in China
is following a so-called “Latin Americanization” way where average urban incomes
are close to two times rural ones. “There is tremendous commercial interest by
outsiders with China, and some of that may explain the economic-friendly-but-
politically-neutral-or-weak front that many Western countries and their businesses
have with China (…) Some are happy to point out problems in China, while
overlooking problems in their own countries. Others may be afraid of the rise of
China and see it as a threat to their jobs.” (globalissues.com)

The role of China in the world is becoming increasingly important, particularly in
the Third World. “In Angola for example, where there are lots of oil interest (not
just from China), some Chinese companies have been accused of ignoring local
issues, for example by importing many materials from China rather than sourcing it
locally, and even hiring Chinese only, excluding local Angolans.”
(globalissues.com)

How do the Chinese entrepreneurs imagine their future? Are policies in China
building a sustainable future for the world or just for the wealthy elite?
Directive:
1. Read the Chapter When China rules the world from the book “When China
Rules the World” (p. 363-413) by Martin Jacques, Pinguin Books 2009. (F1; 3
hours).

2. Watch the two videos about China in Africa (BBC African Journey DRCongo (F2)
and China in Africa, Al-Jaz (F3a and F3b)) and the film “China’s Capitalist
Revolution” (F4) (3 hours).

3. Present your conclusion to your team explaining how the world will be with
China as the first potential leader of the world and conclude your presentation
together by setting up five statements about China’s role in the world by
2050 (2 hours).

4. Write your statements and send to your teacher.
