Introduction:
History is full of examples of unique people who with passion and ingenuity come
up with all kinds of inventions to improve life. Around the world today, there are
thousands of examples of new technologies and communication that improve life
for the poorest people on the planet.

Doctor Summers from Baltimore found a simple method to cure night blindness,
which is caused by lack of A-vitamins, by producing small plastic droplets with A-
vitamins, which can be administered by anyone. Two drops of A-vitamin twice a
year not only cures night blindness, but also considerably improves the child’s
immune system.

Nicholas Nigroponte and a couple of his fellow scientists in Massachusetts set out
on a mission in the 1960’s: “We aim to provide each child with a rugged, low-cost,
low-power, connected laptop. To this end, we have designed hardware, content and
software for collaborative, joyful, and self-empowered learning. With access to this
type of tool, children are engaged in their own education, and learn, share, and
create together. They become connected to each other, to the world and to a brighter
future.” Today 2.4 million teachers and children in developing countries have a
laptop.

The examples are many – energy saving stoves, rope pumps, tippy-taps, water purification methods, mobile phones, malaria prevention, health services, agriculture, soil improvements, etc., etc…

Often development is not about the lack of technological solutions, but lack of a concept and finances to make it a reality. It does not help that a clinic offers free HIV-tests, if people do not have the means of transport to get there. So when doing development work in poor rural communities it is essential to have a holistic view.

Often one improvement or development can start a domino effect in several ways; for example by teaching women how to feed their children nutritious food, the children get healthier and learn better, which means they will get a richer life and become more productive.

In this task you will discuss how modern technology and communication can contribute to development in poor areas.
Directive:
1. Read the files.

2. Get together in your trio and brain storm a list of modern technologies and communication that’s available.

3. Discuss how these can contribute to development in poor areas and what it would take to do so.

4. Write a short conclusion and sent to your teacher.
